Butterfly Trail on the Ridge

We are quite lucky in that Cock Road Ridge is a haven for a number of species of insects, including the butterfly, probably because of the diverse nature of the flora that exists.

So far we have managed to identify a total of 21 butterfly species:

Butterflies Spotted on the Ridge:

Blue, Common
Brimstone
Clouded Yellow
Comma
Gatekeeper
Meadow Brown
Orange Tip
Painted Lady
Peacock
Red Admiral
Ringlet
Skipper, Grizzled
Skipper, Large
Skipper, Small
Small Copper
Small Tortoiseshell
Speckled Wood
White, Green-Veined
White, Large
White, Marbled
White, Small

That's just under half of the number of species that can be seen in the UK.

We're currently looking at writing a trail for you on this page, to follow across the Ridge where you can see many of these butterflies. Of course, much will depend on the time of year you undertake the walk since many of these species have different flying times from each other. However, that also means you can come back at a different time of year and potentially see a different set of butterflies!

You will be able to download the 'walk' once we've finished it, to print out and follow as you walk across the Ridge. It will be in pdf format which can be viewed using the free Adobe Reader. If you don't have a copy of Adobe Reader you can download it free of charge from Adobe (opens in a new window). You can also print it out from that software.

For those of you who may not want to do the walk, we've also included the photographs of all the butterflies we've personally taken on the Ridge, to help with recognition whenever you are next walking and see any of our butterflies. See below.
