The Ridge Gets its First Informative Signs

At last, the first Cock Road Ridge sign has been created and installed on the Ridge. It's taken months to get to this stage, but it's a real thrill to see it finally in place.

The small group of members collaborated to put the design together, including the map layout, text and photographs. The photographs were almost all exclusively from around the Ridge. All these items were taken to a professional designer who then put all the elements together, adding additional images and touches to make it more presentable.

The design was then handed to the sign makers who made three signs in all (one each for the primary entrances to the Ridge) on to laminated metal sheets. They also supplied the steel uprights and fittings.

So the 24th November 2007 saw that same small group on the Ridge at the Hollyguest Road end. Once we'd established the best vantage point for the sign, making sure it was not directly in the sun and away from growing vegetation, digging began in earnest.

Two deep holes were dug to accommodate the uprights. The digging was quite labour-intensive at times with stones and roots getting in the way at this particular site.

Our first Ridge sign took several hours to install, but using quick-set cement soon saw us standing proudly by the newly-installed feature:

Christmas was imminent and we had to wait a while for the second and third sign to be manufactured, so it was few weeks more before we were able to schedule another workday and install the second of the signs, this time at the entrance near Westons Way.

The second one was installed right opposite the entrance so that visitors should see it as they enter through the gate. It didn't take long to get this one installed:

The third and final Ridge sign was installed at the Wraxhall Road end, again, near the entrance so that arriving visitors will be presented with it.

This was the easiest sign to install. Not only were we now seasoned sign-installers, we were lucky to have a soft patch of ground without stones or heavy roots!

We hope you'll spend time reading the signs as they give a little information and history of the Ridge. Let us know what you think via the forum.
